Where do we start?
Let's start with Congratulations to you both! Then check our dates and availability.
Whether you're loving the planning or feeling bogged down with endless preparations this is a beautiful time of celebration. I can help where you are struggling or follow your plans if you're clear about what you want. Together we can design and bake a memory.

What plans have you made already?
You might already have a scrap book full of cake photos and ideas - that's great. If not we still have so much to draw on. We can talk about your wedding theme, your interests, the style of your venue and the location of your wedding, your colour schemes and themes, flowers, your dress.... so much for inspiration.

What will the overall look of the cake be?
This is the starting point for the design, which will remain flexible throughout the planning process. Remember that this will a focal point during the reception and a sweet symbol of your union. It can be as unique and you are as a couple.
Maybe you prefer hexagons to square, hearts to round or oval cakes. We can plan around your taste. We will also look at tiers - how many? Will they be layered in the American style or appear floating? How will the spaces look? What will the covering of the cake be made from and how will it taste? What colours are important to you?

How will the cake be decorated?
We will talk about cascading flowers, fabric effects and drapes, modern colours, traditional and rustic designs, quirky ideas, seasons, venue and wedding styles.
We will also look at how your wedding cake will be displayed and factor in considerations about where it will be placed and what the venue is like. There is no point having an intricate chocolate masterpiece that will simply melt in the sun before anyone sees it!
Will you have a cake topper for your wedding cake? A traditional Bride and Groom/Bride and Bride/Groom and Groom/whole family, children too? Something quirky? Flowers? The smallest of details can be just right for YOU.

Deeper Considerations.... or what is inside the cake!
Perhaps you have a favourite cake from your childhood, or would like a traditional marzipan and iced fruit cake with a top tier to save. You might like spices for winter warmth or ginger for an Asian influence, lemon to evoke spring, or mocha chocolate for after dinner. We can look at all the options and arrange a tasting to be sure, with choices of colour and fillings. Of course you don't have to stick with one flavour. Tiers can vary to make sure everyone is happy.

Understanding the lingo.
Just like when you look at wedding dresses there can be lots of new vocabulary and terminology. This is an important feature at your wedding so get to know what it all means and please ASK me anything you don't understand. We don't want any confusions that could mean you don't have just what you want.

Ways to save money.
It would be lovely to forget the budget and have everything we ever dreamed of - and more - but in the real world, wedding or not, this isn't always possible. However there are ways to save money but not cut corners in your design. Obviously the less intricate designs take less time and this can be a way to save money. Using real flowers can also save on the hours that sugar flowers can take to make but of course cannot be kept as a keepsake so this is something to consider.
If your dream is for a tall cake with many tiers but that would be far too much cake for the size of your reception we can decorate cake dummies and no one but the budget would ever know the difference.
If you don't necessarily want to have a huge cake but have a lot of guests we can make 'cutting cake' which will can even the same flavour as your main cake but without the decoration. This would just be cut in the kitchen and again no one would ever know the difference. It can also be a way to introduce different flavours.
Don't forget that you can also save money by using your cake as your desert, reducing your catering costs.

Current Trends.
Traditions from other countries often spread and bring a unique quality to a wedding. From America, the Groom's Cake is often a reflection of the Groom's interests and more of a novelty cake in design than a traditional wedding cake and might be something that would interest you. It can also bring a different flavoured cake to the day if you prefer the main cake to be all of one type. From France, the Croquembouche is now popular in America and can be a spectacular desert.
At home we have a tradition of intricate piped decoration that reflects both our pottery and architectural styles. Quirky American styled modern cakes have been popular in recent years, however we are now seeing a revival in these older techniques, often with modern twists such as sparkling edible as well as non edible jewels and details.
The Big Day.
There won't be anything left for you to do but enjoy the day. We will have talked and tasted. Styled and sketched. I will deliver and bring all sorts of extras so that the service you have chosen doesn't end until YOUR cake - YOUR focal point - looks just wonderful.
